Unst - Textiles Mini Tour

Sketchbook workshop for textiles
Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th July 2010
We were delighted to be able to work with Andy Ross on the first of the ASF Shetland textiles mini tours.
The tours aim to showcase the textile traditions and industry in the islands, and link them with associated art and craft.
As part of this comprehensive textile taster Amy delivered a short workshop on using sketchbooks at the Unst Heritage Centre. The workshop aimed to introduce participants to using sketchbooks to record information and ideas, and how this can translate into 2D designs for textiles. Each participant received their own hand made sketch book with a variety of papers and pockets for collecting ideas and inspiration over the duration of the tour.
Andy Ross, organiser and participant on the tours, expained the workshop experience:
"Amy took us through a variety of techniques and media, from found objects like twigs and ink to conte crayon, to help us see things in a different way and to enable us to capture ideas and inspiration on the tour. We started off with crayons, then moved on to collage, and finally ink and pastels."
"We all enjoyed the experience very much. It helped us to refine our eye for colour, shape and texture, and made a real difference to all of us on the tour, some of whom had not drawn for fifty years! For future tours, we will start the event off with this workshop, a lively and enlivening beginning to our journeys of textile discovery."
