Our first workshop...

Amy gives a lesson on composition
Shetland's Natural and Built Landscapes - South Friday 31st July – Sunday 2nd August 2009 Weekend Workshop at Bridge End in Burra. 10 lovely people of varying ages and abilities participated on our first weekend. Both the quality of work produced and participant feedback have been excellent and the weekend was a great success so thank you everyone!
What we did:
FridayIt was a lovely evening at Bridge End, so participants were sent out into the sunshine with their G&Ts to perform a mark making tools search. Once they had found an assortment of interesting objects they then used them with ink to produce drawing studies of the Bridge End area. After a dinner of salmon, new potatoes and fresh salad, Amy gave a presentation of examples of media use by other artists before getting the materials out to spend the evening experimenting with the new media and preparing background sheets for the next day's drawing.
Saturday
The weather forecast for Saturday was not good and we were relieved to have a dry, if slightly blustery, start to the day. After a hearty breakfast the morning was spent doing energetic loosen up drawings at the Muckle Boat Yard in Scalloway. These were produced on A1 sheets using ink, charcoal and a battle with the wind. By 12.30pm the group had moved south for tea and cakes in Channerwick. This location was then used to produce compositional studies in sketchbooks and finished pieces using mixed media on prepared sheets. The third location of the day was the croft house museum at Boddam where the group enjoyed a picnic lunch before moving inside to shelter from the rain by the peat fire. Here they worked on reduction drawing, tonal studies & sketchbook work before listening to some live music and traditional Shetland songs. Finally the group headed to St Ninian's Isle to produce some quick water colour washes of the famous tombola before returning home to Bridge End for a dinner of Greek style roast lamb. After dinner the day's work was exhibited on the walls and the group performed a crit and discussion of their work.
Sunday
Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day and the group spent a pleasant morning at the Lodberries in Lerwick. Amy provided a lesson in composition using Bain's Beach as a handy blackboard! The class then worked on "invisible" drawings using a stanley knife and water colour wash to expose lines. Another tea break and it was up to Law Lane to work on perspective. The sun was so warm here that plans to lunch at the Museum were abandoned in favour of a picnic lunch in the lane. The final location was the Shetland Museum and Hay's Dock, where the class used materials of their choice to produce a finished piece. This was followed by a crit of the days work and a review of the weekend before saying goodbye. The big farewell was, however, postponed when Bob invited everyone back to his for coffee - I'd safely say that the group bonded pretty well! Well done everyone - a great weekend! : )
